synENGIE no. 1 2017 – PARLEZ-VOUS FRANÇAIS

Did you know? Many expressions used in French are borrowed from other languages. That's exactly the case with the often heard  En autant que…

En autant que is a word for word translation of the English expression "in as much as".  So when speaking French, instead of using a borrowed expression, try one of the following:

synENGIE no. 1 2017 - DO YOU KNOW ABOUT BOMA BEST®… SUSTAINABLE WORKPLACES?

Some of you are already familiar with the BOMA BEST® environmental certification program for buildings. Our teams are often asked to help clients such as Ivanhoé Cambridge or Allied acquire this mark of responsible, respectful environmental management for their buildings. Building certification is based on a score and remains valid for three years. During that time, the owner and the manager commit at the very least to implement the program’s best practices. The level of certification obtained depends on the building’s performance in key areas of environmental management such as energy, water, air quality, and procurement. But what about tenants like us, who would also like to show their commitment to the environment? How can we act when we have very little control over some of these indicators?

Well BOMA Canada has a solution. In 2016, the association introduced a new certification program: BOMA BEST® Sustainable Workplaces, designed just for tenants. Instead of being based on a score, this accessible, flexible certification requires that candidates adopt a realistic environmental policy and implement it at the appropriate time. To be certified does not require having control over the building. Instead, the program determines what a tenant can and cannot control, what is already being done or what is planned in future. The company sets its own objectives and strives to upgrade them as progress is made. This policy must set out the actions to be taken once the company gains some control over its energy and water use, indoor environmental quality, recycling, materials purchasing, and so forth. For example, a tenant may commit to efforts to increase access to natural light for interior offices or to use healthier materials and more environmentally friendly furniture when the time comes to renovate its offices. Thus, regardless of the condition or location of the office, the program sets a starting point for measuring environmental performance in the short term, and ensuring continuous improvement.

Why are we describing this program to you?

You have probably already guessed. We are going to seek certification! Vincent Dupuy, our Sustainable Building Adviser, has prepared the first draft of our policy. The certification exercise requires collaboration between departments and results in a series of inclusive, collective policies that lay out a path for the future. This provides the perfect opportunity to start a dialogue on how to make internal improvements. You will be informed of the progress soon so everyone can contribute to attaining this objective.

synENGIE no. 1 2017 - THINK DIGITAL - M2M: machines that talk to other machines

Just like us, machines can fall ill in the wee small hours. If we get sick, we just call 911 and someone asks whether we need an ambulance.

Machines can also talk to and interact with each other, and even take certain required actions. Here is an example of communication between two machines, translated into human language. To maintain confidentiality, we will call them Mach1 and Doc.

Mach1: Picks up the cellphone and dials “Engie911.”

Doc: Hello! Doc here, how can I help you?

Mach1: I have a large drop in voltage and my temperature is rising fast!

Doc: This time, it’s serious because the ID365 alarm message I have just received indicates that you’re close to breaking down. I’m going to call a human to solve this problem remotely, before our client is disturbed.

Just so you know, the problem was effectively resolved and Mach1 is doing well. Now, how do we implement this service between our machines?

The answer is M2M (machine to machine), which encompasses all the new technologies available (Mobile, Cloud, etc.) so different machines, often at a distance, can interact safely, with no human intervention. We have just successfully tested this solution on several sites and are now in phase 1 of rollout on some ten sites. This will let us take the pulse of our facilities at all times, for very fast remote response and enhanced service to ENGIE clients.

synENGIE no.1 2017 - 25 CANDLES FOR ENGIE SERVICES

We have made great strides since October 1, 1992!

A quarter century and four name changes later, here we are, members of the extended ENGIE family. Much water and many employees and clients have passed under the bridge! Throughout this year, we will be highlighting our successes and looking to the future. A committee of representatives from the various departments is now busy drawing up the program for the year. Without giving away too many secrets, the cornerstone of the festivities will be held this summer. In the interim, stay tuned so you don’t miss a thing.

Happy birthday, everyone!

synENGIE no. 1 2017 - Spotlight on... DEFENCE CONSTRUCTION CANADA

For over a year now, ENGIE has been providing Facility Management services to more than 30 armouries across Quebec, some located outside metropolitan areas. Managing this real estate portfolio of more than a million square feet specifically includes technical maintenance (hard) and auxiliary (soft) services as well as a significant project management component to modernize architectural components and building infrastructure. While a large network of subcontractors has been assembled to deliver the broad range of services required, an experienced internal management team has been assigned to this contract with one hub in Montreal and the other in Quebec City. The ENGIE call centre, operating 24/7, ensures that all armouries can access emergency service at any time, anywhere in the province.

Our contract with Defence Construction Canada is also one of our largest facility management assignments in North America, for which ENGIE has implemented and upgraded several tools and processes associated with service delivery. For example, use of Planon’s web call centre captures data in real time on types of user service requests, to guide effective budget planning, measure service quality and ensure friendly delivery of preventive and corrective operations from the previous month. Based on an innovative supply model that seeks greater private sector involvement in daily operations, at the best quality-price ratio, the contract model also includes several performance indicators that allow the client to measure performance quality.
